I have found a way to lighten photos in Illustrator. Select the image you want to lighten. EDIT - EDIT COLORS - ADJUST COLOR BALANCE - select this. Move all the little arrows to the left by the same value - I just lightened a Spiderman image I got from Google that was printing too dark.
